Compositor británico. Estudió en el Royal College of Music y en la Universidad de Cambridge, así como en Berlín con el compositor Max Bruch. Después de recopilar canciones folclóricas inglesas para su trabajo académico, combinó la melodía folclórica con enfoques modernos en la armonía y el ritmo, forjando así un estilo musical a la vez muy personal y profundamente inglés. Sus nueve sinfonías, entre ellas Sea Symphony (1909), London Symphony (1913) y Sinfonía antártica (1952), fueron sus obras más exploratorias. Otras piezas populares de su autoría son The Lark Ascending (1914) y Serenade to Music (1938); además compuso cinco óperas, entre ellas Riders to the Sea (1936). Durante toda su vida dirigió orquestas con profusión y editó The English Hymnal (1904–06).
